FINSOL-Terrazzo Terrazzo is a composition of materials poured in place for floors and walls finishing. The composition is consisting of small pieces of aggregates of marble, quarts, granite, glass or any other suitable materials which are known as terrazzo chips, then mixed with cementitious binder and polymeric or combination of both.
Terrazzo chips are made from named rocks which may appear in different colors as black, white, pink, grey, khaki, blue etc. In order to get attractive effect of finished product, terrazzo chips are in combined in different colors and sizes but also cement pigments can also be added in binders.
Metal or PVC strips often used to divide sections to allow expansion and contraction of the applied surface which also allow changes in colors on composition in pattern for architectural effect. After it is cured the grinding take place to provide satisfaction texture to the client. In the past grinding work was done with poor equipment which caused the work to be delayed and its quality was poor, unlike now where modern machines and their accessories are used.
0ne among the modern accessories which is attached to the machine for grinding terrazzo is known as “Diamond blocks”. These blocks are developed in ability to give out different smoothness results depends to the customer’s needs. Those different smoothness known as “mesh”, for instance to get rough surface (for garage, ware houses, parking areas) we use “35/50 mesh”. to get semi fine surface we use 140/270 mesh after 35/50 mesh and to get precious finish we use 350/470 mesh after 140/270 and 35/50 mesh respectively.
If the customer needs more smoothness after grinding with diamond blocks we use “Diamond pads” to get more precious finish, which are also developed into different smoothness which known as “grit” and they are range from 50grit to 8000 grit, the high the number the higher the softness.
After grinding process is completed the terrazzo is washed by clean soaped water before polishing. There are several types of polish used on terrazzo depends on customer needs.
It is very important to polish terrazzo because not only enhancing the appearance but also strengthen the surface, creates a protective layer, preventing future damage and extending the life span of the floor.
TYPES OF TERRAZZO Types of terrazzo is based on the way is constructed and materials used. 1.Method of application there are; a) Monolithic terrazzo b) Rustic terrazzo c) Bonded terrazzo d)Sand-cushion terrazzo
USES OF TERRAZZO Terrazzo can be used on many areas whether is pre-cast or cast in-situ as a finishing item due to its durability, quality and attractive. Although in most cases terrazzo used as a floor finisher (terrazzo tiles -pre cast) or cast in-situ but can also be used on making kitchen sink, washing basin, wall finishing, garden bench, flower pots, cemetery etc.
HISTORY OF TERRAZZO The origin of terrazzo can trace their roots across the globe and as far back as ancient Egypt. But modern we are using today began its story around 500 years ago in Venice-Italy.
The name “terrazzo” is originated from Italian word “terrazzi” ter.raz.zo” in English known as” terrace” which means Italian artisans of the 15th and 16th century began to collect the waste pieces or discarded chips from marble slabs and imbed them into clay mixtures to design inexpensive terrace at their home.
After drying had the task of rubbing the surface with a stone by their hand to smoothen the mixture. Later on invention of a long handle weighted stick that put less stress on installer’s body which known as “Galera stick” happened and made easy on installation of terrazzo. Other idea came after years of introducing and applying goat milk to make terrazzo shining and brilliant. Then terrazzo develops time to time until today is popular and more durable floor than any other around the world.
Terrazzo soon become an eco-friendly flooring system due to its recycling of materials.ABOUT FINSOL-Terrazzo After experiencing several problems in the completion of construction work on the floors, we decided to make research to find out which type of the floor is durable, better and attractive.
